Ditch Witch 1020 Service Manual
Used a Ditch Witch a few weeks ago to dig some 1-2 foot deep trenches. There were some medium slopes. I don't know what size or model this thing was, but it was AWFUL to work with. 2 wheel drive, no steering assist, and VERY heavy, of course. Most would say well that's not Ditch Witches fault that you didn't know that. It's actually the first trencher I have used.
Apr 24, 2016 Looking for ditch witch 1020 walk behind trencher parts diagram.can not get link to work from ditch witch website.
I'm just not impressed at all that they would make something this heavy and hard to maneuver and not have put any steering assist on it as a standard. What should I use next time? Mini skid with attachment? Yeah Brendon, rentals are tough. The machines are usually the lower priced models.
I may be a little biased but Ditch Witch is the only walk-behind machine that I've used and liked. The C9 pictured here (not mine) is the first model that I used. I'm glad I was young when I was using it. The 1820 has been an excellent machine. Hydraulic steering, boom. It can pull pretty good size rocks out of the ground. Easy to work on.
And it fits through standard gates. Just try to find one with hydraulic steering. You'll be much happier. And not near as tired. This 1820 is mine. The crumber has been removed, in this photo, it's usually on. I would highly recommend anyone using a trencher to use a crumber.

A crumber cleans out ditches and saves man hours. You were probably renting 1000 series (1020, 1030).
You need to get up to 15, 16 or 1800 series. That's how trechers work. They don't need steering assist because you're supposed to be trenching in straight lines and they need to be heavy or else they won't be able to stay on the ground when trenching hard soil. A skid steer really isn't going to be useable on a small lot, unless you plan on taking out sections of fence You just need more time on the machine to learn how to let it do most of the work for you.
They don't need that much turning if you've layed your trenching out well and turning them really isn't all that hard. I'm 5' 7' and 140# so if I can do it, you can as well. Learn to work the machine instead of the machine working you. Yeah Brendon, rentals are tough. The machines are usually the lower priced models.
