Clearly, leaps and bounds have been made in gender equality in the last century. But what was dating like in your grandparents' era?
A trip back to 1936 via the book How To Make Love, by Hugh Morris, provides us with some insight to what was then promoted as modern. Unfortunately, and as absurd as most of the advice now seems in this book, a lot of it has informed how some people still think about sex in 2016. How To Make Love was written for unmarried young people (presumably in their 20s) and served as an update to the stuffy courting rules of the Victorian era. However, though women were beginning to gain a sense of identity and strength in the run up to WWII, this book seemed adamant on keeping them submissive; always at the behest of men. This is explained in what the author believed to be the crucial linchpin of a successful relationship: 'Woman, although she is just as anxious for love as man, must never betray her anxiety.
Sep 27, 2016 - 'The lessons taught to young people so many decades ago have. Informed how we think about sex and women today.' Mar 28, 2012 Making love is to ignore all concepts Formal humanity and deliver as one who gives himself up Lovemaking does not have any ties with the physical side of human beings.
She must always be passive. Man, it is, who must be the active partner. 'It is he who makes love to woman. He chases the woman who was made to be chased. The success of love depends entirely on the understanding of this basic relationship.' Women are needy, but they can't let men know that.

They exist to be hunted out by men, and when they are caught, their entire relationship rests on the woman's ability to keep up the charade. Such has undoubtedly contributed to society's rape culture that still exists today. It has told men – throughout the generations – that women still want your attention, even when they're 'pretending' not to. It gets worse. The author directly addresses how women's consent in sex is irrelevant, and even provides tips for would-be sexual assaulters: 'If she flinches, makes an outcry and tries to get up from the sofa, don't worry.

Hold her, gently but firmly, and allay her fears with kind, reassuring words.' Thankfully, we're now having, but societally this is still in its infancy in 2016. Many people don't realise you are violating somebody else if they physically, verbally, or emotionally resist you, but you continue to 'convince' them otherwise anyway.
And if women do physically resist you by using force? Back in 1936, that would've meant they are untrustworthy and unfit to be in a relationship with: 'If she flinches, makes an outcry, a loud stentorian outcry, mind you, and starts to scratch your face, then start to worry or start to get yourself out of a bad situation. Such girls are not to be trifled with.' The author of How To Make Love even has a judgemental name for situations in which women do possess equality: a 'reversed relationship'. Such is, he wrote, 'not only devoid of love, but ludicrous'. Sentiments such as this likely brought about the word 'bitch', a derogatory term still used for strong women in 2016 when they display the same veracity as their male counterparts. What's curious about this book is the fact that the term 'make love to' – a term that you still hear today – insinuates that sex is something one person does to another.
It makes one person animate, the other inanimate. This is where slut shaming comes from. The 1936 view that sex can't be mutually enjoyed has led to a dichotomy that still affects 2016 females: either you're a prude, or you're a slut. You're either active or passive; you can't give and take, and there's nowhere in the middle. It would be unfair to suggest that how people were told to behave 80 years ago, as decided by one book, was representative of all young people of the era.
But, it's clear that the lessons taught to young people so many decades ago have, at least to some extent, informed how we think about sex and women today. Now that we can actively acknowledge where some of society's ideas around sex came from, we can also acknowledge how antiquated they are. What was decidedly modern back in 1936 has no place in 2016, and that means ensuring there are no active nor passive partners in any relationship, only equals who approach sex together.
